Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy tents housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four people. This tragedy highlights the perilous situation that continue after more than two years of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Provides Little Relief from Severe Weather

While a truce has been active since last fall, aid groups report that residents broadly lack the adequate shelter required to survive frequent cold-weather events.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the dead include two women, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy succumbed of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated Bassel Hamouda after the burial. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Buried in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, three people of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall fell onto their tent in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 others were hurt in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday started removing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out shelter kits, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

The majority of the population live in improvised shelters because their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Fatality Numbers Since the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the Hamas-run government, reports over four hundred and forty individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed fatality data that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and forty females – had been lost their lives after the truce began because of military operations, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected incidents where enough details had been gathered to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of children had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," Elder told journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s population of over 2 million individuals has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly needed during the winter months. This marks the third cold season after the war between the state and the group started on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports more than 71,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military campaign.
