The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Use of Generative AI for Next Project

The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its next major project, creating immense hype within the industry. However, recent comments from the studio's lead designer have added clarity to the discussion, addressing the developer's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a new statement, Larian's director outlined that the company is utilizing machine learning for specific preliminary tasks. These involve fleshing out pitch decks, producing initial concept art, and drafting placeholder copy.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the end assets in the game will be crafted solely by actual creatives. "We are developing every line ourselves," he stated.

Larian is actively increasing our team of writers and are actively putting together narrative groups.

Since concept art is being particularly called out — we currently have 23 artistic staff and have positions available for more talent.

Everything we do is incremental and focused on letting our team spend more time on actual creation.

Any machine learning application applied correctly is a boost to a developer's process, not a substitute for their skill.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The news of using AI originally sparked unease among some the community. In response, Vincke provided additional elaboration on public forums.

"We use machine learning to gather inspiration, similar to we use the internet and art books," he stated. "In the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then replace with authentic concept art."

He added, "Larian brings on artists for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to execute what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past outlined the studio's targeted method to AI and ML, categorizing its use into primary functions:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes refining animations, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype basic models of gameplay ideas to validate concepts prior to full implementation.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Investigating how AI could eventually create new forms of player agency, particularly in managing player-driven narratives in a detailed game universe.

He specifically affirmed that key artistic areas — such as music composition — are are in no way areas where the studio is replacing creative input. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these exact positions.

"We are not shipping a game with AI-generated content, and we are certainly not looking at cutting staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
