That Grisly Animated Film Conclusion That Haunts Fans
Among every mature cartoon movies I’ve ever viewed, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the terror-laced conclusion of the viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spain-based writer-director created a grim, melancholy and often savage universe with a few small , desolate glimmers of hope.
While Unicorn Wars appears as it stemmed from a desire to push animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was more an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is communicated through a squad of colorful pastel bears , openly modeled after a famous line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a community centered on militarism and the war machine, many of these animals are fixated on killing unicorns, thanks to a holy book which states them they were once rulers of the woods, until these creatures forced them out.
Some haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, and prefer to sample drugs and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly counterparts, these bright beings have visible sexual organs and clear sex drives.
For one notably brutal, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the battle with the unicorns turns into a path to control — and particularly to supremacy above his more tender, kinder brother the character Tubby.
The character is a bully , an apparent antisocial figure , and as fear overcomes his unit and kills his fellow soldiers one by one, he seizes progressively power on his own behalf, via progressively violent, harmful methods.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own horror, in the form of an expanding, harmful creature in their forest.
“In the early stages, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “However it becomes a more intense and melancholic film. And in the finale, it transforms into a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars commences feeling a bit like one of the more quirky movies by a renowned animator, which find a mischievous joy in permitting drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Subsequently it turns into something more like a bleaker work by that same creator, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable relation to the actual horror of war.
In the finale, it’s an outright Grand Guignol massacre.
The fear which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch begins a lot earlier than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who want to view a movie they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story which delivers no restraint.
See it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and stay with you.
