Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
