Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Expected to Become World Boxing Champion as Ukrainian Champion Usyk Vacates Belt
The UK's Fabio Wardley will be upgraded to world boxing champion after Usyk decided to relinquish his world title
This follows after the champion told boxing authorities he would not proceed with a required championship defense against the British challenger
WBO Statement
The WBO stated that the champion decided to give up his belt after deep reflection"
Usyk still holds the three major championship belts, having overcome Daniel Dubois at the famous London venue in July to become a double undisputed champion
He initially achieved the complete unified champion in May 2024 by defeating the British champion, before relinquishing one championship a month afterwards and choosing to avoid the mandatory challenger
"WBO president Olivieri described Usyk as exceptional in a statement"
"Officials expressed its profound respect, admiration and gratitude to Usyk, an unbeaten multi-division champion"
"His career stands as one of the most remarkable and significant of the recent fighting history"
The WBO added that its doors "will always remain open Usyk and his team"
Title Reign
Usyk won the championship in two years ago by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to successfully defend multiple times
In mid-year, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against interim champion Joseph Parker, only for a Usyk's physical issue to require rescheduling of the fight
New Champion's Path
But Wardley, 30, captured the temporary championship from his opponent with a huge upset in the championship rounds at London's O2 Arena last month and was ordered to fight the champion before the month's conclusion
The WBO is yet to officially confirm Wardley's promotion but his manager Warren believes it is a formality
"Britain has a new heavyweight world champion and a new star of the sport"
"A truly extraordinary path I've seen in my 45 years as a boxing representative and I could not be happier for the British fighter"
"Some huge fights ahead for 2026 as he protects his championship and builds his reputation in the fighting community"
Wardley entered the sport aged 20, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had just 21 professional fights
