Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group
Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.
Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season are included.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of characters who will branch out from the central cast to begin their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.
The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).
Dividing the Cast
With an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at one table would be impossible.
Hence, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Seekers.
Characteristics of the Soldiers Table
Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy narrative style where diplomatic options are rare.
At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might appear out of place, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
First, the group knows exactly where to go next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.
A former ally of the deceased character—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his own means, breaking into the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to auction.
The traitor then paid off his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother close behind.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the urban setting:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, wants revenge.
- Kattigan knows the region and warns that it is a dangerous place.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
- Yet, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the party reach places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, Teor vowed a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.
Wanted and Hunted
In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:
- The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are allied with.
- Teor is wanted dead by the family.
This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of the antagonist.
Future Episodes
Based on the latest episode’s post-show segment, we find out that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Seekers and Strategists parties.
Fans can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
