Condemnation Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Criticism

Figures from across the political divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Online Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial amount.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to defend the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
