Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
